We'll be back in September

We had our last regular meeting last night in Quasar in Chester before handing out k2ndersteg t-shirts and asking stupid questions that we'd answered hundreds of times before.

That's it for this term, unless you're coming to Switzerland, we're back in September - but keep your eyes on your phones in case we do some kayaking in August.

Don't worry, I've not given up!

It's been quite a while since I updated the K2 website - sorry! Been a bit busy, and the Unit's been so busy it's been difficult keeping up...

So, let's catch up. First of all there was REXJAM. It's been 100 years since Scouting starting in Wrexham, and we had a big camp to celebrate. No-one could come up with a name for the camp though so K2 were asked and came up with REXJAM.

A reasonable turnout from K2 - bolstered by extras from as far affield as London and Italy - and a reasonable camp too. Ben did a good job as Ellen's media bitch by teaming up with Rhys to do the Radio Rexjam breakfast show, and producing a quite brilliant edition of REXPRESS the camp newspaper.

The following Monday we did some much needed service (we're not very good at getting people to let us help them!) by sorting out the garden at Dynamic.

Then we had the news that four K2 members - Fraser, Ellen, Simon and Leah - had been elected to represent Scouting on the Wrexham Youth Parliament, or Senedd yr Ifanc. Cool!

Finally, we had a packed night down Cox Wood doing archery and abseiling.

Phew! No wonder I look tired!

An old favourite returns

We had planned to do a night on South Africa tonight, but while it sounded a good idea when we did the programme planning, when I sat down and thought of ideas it looked like it was going to be a bit lame.

So we jumped in a waterfall and explored caves instead!

Lumberjacks & Lovespoons

It was like a scene at the start of Casualty. Explorers carving with sharp craft knives, thick metal tent pegs being heated on gas stoves, and Adam at the top of a step ladder with a chain-saw.

Luckily (or actually because of a thorough risk assessment) the Maelor hospital was unbothered by us and everything went off safely.

We ended up with a selection of average attempts at Welsh love spoon carving, and the tree outside which is to be carved into a totem pole to celebrate 100 years of 1st Rhosnessney Scout Group is stripped of branches ready for the wood carver.

The other success of the night was the Revision Corner initiative. Explorers can now do their revision while attending K2!

Hunting for jobs and treasure

Two activities tonight, swapping next week, with half doing interview technique with Butch, Ad and Gordon, while me and Dean gave the rest a bike treasure hunt to do.

Not one of our best turnouts, but we understand that two hours break from revision for most will result in failing every exam.

Active weekend for some

We offered a full range of activities this weekend, climbing on Saturday, canoeing on Sunday and rafting on Monday, camping over on Saturday and Sunday night, but it seems like most Explorers had different plans.

Ah well, we had a good days canoeing on the Sunday with four Explorers, and then seven came along to rafting on the Monday. The rest missed out!

Getting a little bit Lost

In celebration of the finale of Lost, we had our own plane crash tonight, and the resulting stew that we made was as fishy as their plot.

Here's the results that I forgot to read out...!

Jake's Team - 34 points out of 50
Tom's Team - 30 points out of 50
Christian's Team - 26 points out of 50
George's Team - 23 points out of 50
Rhys's Team - 21 points out of 50

K2's drugs photo diary

We set the Explorers the task of producing a photo diary to educate Cubs about drugs, alcohol and smoking.

Varying results, but the Daily Star have been on wanting to employ Rob!

Explorers get pepper sprayed

There was a frightening moment during our visit to Wrexham Police HQ on Monday when the police officer demonstrating pepper spray let it spray all over several K2 Explorers. Their faces were a picture, but luckily it was just water in the training spray!

It was a really good trip with the police showing us the various methods they have at their disposal to defend themselves against criminals including batons, pepper spray, and the thing we all came to see - taser.

Watch the video here

We finished off investing Harry and Robyn in the cells.

Thanks to PC Paul Davies and his colleagues.

From Wye to Wimbledon

Well, not quite Wimbledon, but after Wrexham Tennis Centre couldn't fit us in on the night we wanted, we headed for Bellevue Park instead and held our own K2 tennis tournament. Despite Jordan having a broken arm, his partnership with Joe proved a match for everyone else.

Before the tennis, five K2 Explorers, together with myself, Adam, Butcher, Dean and Kris, spent the weekend paddling down the river Wye with the annual Canoe Cruise.
